Bluetooth Definition

Bluetooth is a short distance wireless technology. It is used to make PANs between your devices and with any nearby devices.

An example when you could use bluetooth would be when you are driving along in your car and your mobile phone is in your pocket, you could use a wireless headset to talk to the person on the other line. You could also send and receive files e.g. if you had a word document on your mobile, you could send it to a bluetooth enabled printer and the printer would be able to print your document off.

The latest car manufacturers trying to keep up with technology have now introduced bluetooth enabled cars that will allow you to use bluetooth to have a hands free mobile phone. This has become extremely popular as the dangers of driving while talking on your phone have increased and in many countries is now a driving offence.

With most modern mobile phones being bluetooth enabled, the mobile gaming industry has started to boom. Users can now pair up their mobile phones and play multi-player mobile phone games. The Nokia N-Gage was the first complete gaming mobile phone.

Although many mobile phones support bluetooth, there are specific connections that bluetooth allows know as as 'Profiles'. Headset enables HSP profiles, hands free supports HFP. HSP and HFP are mainly used for connecting your mobile phone to car kits. FTP is used to upload files from your device to web space or FTP account. Bluetooth also allows you to connect to the internet via a mobile phone (DUN). Two other profiles are BPP and HID which allow you to connect to a printer or keyboard.

Most commonly bluetooth enable mobile phones are class 2 which have a connectivity range of close to 30 feet but you do get class 1 mobiles that can offer a enormous range of a whopping 300 feet. Class 1 bluetooth is most commonly used in call center environments where it gives the call center technician the freedom to rome the open plan floor but still be able to talk to the client.

Fact

The term bluetooth was named after a 10th century Danish Viking King called Harald Bluetooth, who conquered Norway.

Infrared Definition

Infrared, related to mobile phones is a short beam of radiation used to send, receive and make connections between mobile phones.

Mobile Phone Infrared

If you all remember back to a few years ago, when the Nokia mobile phone rage first started, I used to play my friends at Snake 2 by connecting each mobile phones together via Infrared. But now that has developed, most modern PC's come with infrared ports which allow you to send files from your PC to your mobile phone.

How It Works

Infrared works by sending a short infrared beam from a mobile to another to create a connection. This has to be done in close proximity as the infrared cannot travel well through the air, so we suggest you connect about a few cm apart. Both parties should then activate infrared and they will be able to share and connect with each other. Infrared is very limited when relating to mobile phones. If you have a hand held device such as a palm top you could create a text file and then go to a printer port and send the text file to the printer, the printer would then acknowledge this and print out the document.

A Ringtone is the audible alert that the phone emits to notify you of an incoming phone call. All contemporary phones support multiple Ringtones, some have built-in Ringtone composers and some can download Ringtones from other phones or the internet.

  • Music Ringtones (Real Tones): This can be actual music, voices, or real-life sounds. Music ringtones are also referred to as real tones or true tones and come in MP3, WAV, or WMA formats.
  • Monophonic Tones: Phones used to only be capable of producing monophonic tones, which are composed of sequential beeps at varying frequencies.
  • Polyphonic Tones: These are much richer in harmony and melody than monophonic tones. Up to 40 notes can play at a time.
  • Singtones: These are personalized ringtones that allows people to record their voice against a pre-selected track, much like karaoke.
  • Sound Effect Ringtones: These ringtones are sound effects. (body functions, sirens, cash register, toilet flush, many more.)

MIDI ringtones  MIDI ringtones (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) enables the creation of polyphonic ringtones (musical compositions with different sounds). Polyphonic means that multiple tones can be played at the same time using instrument sounds such as guitar, drums, electronic piano, etc.

MP3 ringtones  The Beatniks audio technology can be integrated with MPEG codecs to play back MP3 files as ringtones. A clip from a real song on your mobile phone is quite cool. The BAE technology is mobile phone manufacturers such as Motorola, Siemens and Sony Ericsson. The Nokia 7650 was one of the first cell phones to play BAE or MP3 ringtones.

Amr sound clips  AMR (Adaptive Multi-rate Codec) files can be recorded using the phones built-in Recorder application. This way you can record yourself saying "Mums's calling" and assigning the ringtone to "mum" (Nokia 7650 allows assigning separate ringtone to each single contact as well as for each contacts group).

Nokia composer ringtones  The Nokia 3210 was the first Nokia phone to use the composer ringtones. Composer ringtones are also used by other cell phone manufacturers. Composer phones have a built in ringtone composer and you can compose new ringtones directly on their keyboards.

RTTTL ringtones  RTTTL stands for Ringtone Text Transfer Language and it is a format for coding the notes of a ringtone in a universal format. With special ringtone converter programs RTTTL ringtones can be converted to other ringtone formats and uploaded to your cell phone via data cable or a infrared connection.

SMS ringtones  Nokia originally developed SMS to send short text messages between cell phones. Cell phones also use this technique to receive and send non-text information like graphics and ringtones. An sms ringtone can be sent to the phone via sms.

Ringtone converter  Ringtone converters are programs that converts ringtones between different formats so that you can keypress or transfer (with a data cable or infrared connection) ringtones to your mobile phone. Some web sites also offer online convertors and some programs allow you to convert MIDI into RTTTL.
